THIS CONTEST HAS ENDED
“As a teacher, I help mold students and show them different ways to be good citizens...” - Joan Saint-Hilaire
THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST.
THE DEADLINE TO ENTER HAS PASSED.
CGI HERO WINNERS:
Joan is a mentor and inspiration to many in her community as she has been a public school teacher since 1994. She is known to go above and beyond for each of her students, investing time into each one and bringing joy into the classroom. Not only does Joan focus on teaching the curriculum well, she focuses on molding her students and showing them how to be good citizens. As a teacher, she shows up everyday to make a lasting impact on her students and aims to show them that she is always on their side.
Katie Lizana has sewn thousands of mask holder straps, also called ear savers, and it all started with a ripped up bed sheet. After seeing pictures of nurses’ ears being heavily irritated from wearing multiple masks for hours at a time, she knew there had to be a way to make them more comfortable. She found inspiration and transformed the idea into a ripped up bed sheet with a button on each end to secure the mask to the back of the head. This simple idea made a great difference in alleviating the pressure behind the ears. After giving the ear saver to her neighbor and seeing it as a huge success, Lizana began to make dozens of ear savers using ribbons and buttons.
When Demi Genao graduated from nursing school in December 2018, she knew she would be facing many ups and downs in her field. But nothing could have prepared her for the situation she found herself in only a year and a half later, fighting tirelessly on the frontlines against a global pandemic. Genao’s determination to help others extends outside her 12-hour shifts at the hospital. On her days off or after work, Genao can be found buying and delivering groceries to her grandparents and their friends. “At first, I was just helping my grandparents get what they needed from the store, but soon I realized that their elderly friends may not have children or grandchildren living nearby to do the same,” said Genao. “So I asked my grandma if she had any other friends that needed food delivered to their homes, and it snowballed from there.”
Born and raised in Miami, 26-year-old Jarrel Strong lived in nearby Overtown for most of his life. It is his connection to the area and the hardships he experienced that compels him to help the homeless. “I saw the need for daily resources like food for those living on the streets,” says Jarrel. “There are so many people out here that are really struggling, and they have little to no help or resources.” Since March, Jarrel has purchased and made two meal deliveries that fed about 300 men and women in three separate areas. “I was unemployed at the time, but with the roughly $50-$60 I had, I called up my family and friends with the idea to feed the homeless living on the streets,” he says. “I thought it’s the least I can do. I once lived in the same neighborhood – homeless and living in the city around there.”
